Whole Foods Dulce de Leche Cake Review

The Dulce de Leche Cake at Whole Foods cost only $26 (at the time of writing) and was impressively delectable despite being quite heavy!

The dulce de leche frosting on the cake was extraordinarily rich – you can taste the deep caramelized flavors along with a depth of toastiness to it. I could also taste hints of vanilla or cinnamon inside which complements the cake very well. It is also extremely sweet which made it a slow-eating experience!

The chocolate toppings on top of the cake were decadent and were most likely dark chocolate- you could taste the delightful bitterness from the chocolate while yet a nutty tone to it. Though I would have preferred the toppings to be less heavy as it would have been a great contrast to have a light topping against the heaviness of the dulce de leche frosting.

If you chill the cake to a really low temperature the topping gets really hard and slightly crunchy and it tastes much more better. The chocolate sponge cake is very light and airy which contrasts tremendously well with the heaviness of the frosting and toppings. Unfortunately, the sponge cake itself is very dry and you will need to drink something with it. This is one of the major downsides of the cake.

Though the sponge cake does not really have that much of a strong chocolate taste- it’s much more lighter than I had expected but that allows for the dulce de leche to be the main star of the cake.

If you’re looking to pair this cake with a drink; I recommend a black coffee as it helps to moisturize the cake while also giving it much more depth and improves the flavor of the dulce de leche. Essentially, I would not recommend anyone to pair it with a sweet drink as a sugarless drink would be the best to make sure that the experience is not sickly.

Overall, I would give this cake around a 3.5/5 due to how much I enjoyed it but it is quite heavy so I’m not really able to get through even a small slice. The cake itself was dry but the frosting was delicious along with the toppings!
